Brief History of the Department

The Department was established in the year 2015 and offers Master's Degree programme (M.A./M.Sc. in Geography) which consists of 4 semesters from the date of its inception. It has started with 14 students for the academic session 2015-17 and at the end of the academic session 2016-18; the second batch of the department who got passed out was having the strength of 38 students. The numbers of students have increased tremendously with the passing of time and for the academic year 2017-18, the strength reached to 60 students. It shows the departmental progression in bringing the students to have their educational enrichment in the department from diverse geographical settings. The thrust areas of the department are on Geomorphology, Disaster Management, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) Applications, Urban Geography, Health and healthcare Geography. The department has also offered a separate Master's Degree Course on Geoinformatics (M.Sc. in Geoinformatics) w.e.f. 2017 and now the total strength of the student is 22 (Semester 1st and 3rd) now. The thrust areas are Thermal Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics applications in Disaster Risk Management.

Vision of the Department

The Department of Geography at Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol has a vision to strive in integrating the natural and social sciences to understand and solve problems of people and the environment. In doing so, it endeavour to function efficiently to encourage and provide instruction, teaching, training and research in varied aspects of geographical importance. The focus of the department would be to let the students learn their courses proficiently which can further make them progressive and empowered in advancement, dissemination of knowledge, achieving higher education and to meet the growing needs of the society and people.

Mission of the Department

The mission of the department has envisioned to incorporate the current development in the fields of geographical research and to have an integrative framework for Physical and Human Geography (the two distinctive branch of Geography) to thrive unruffled. In addition, to translate the vision into reality, the Department is committed:

  • To make the departmental activities more participatory, the focuses would be to organise seminar, symposia, training and progressive research work from time to time.
  • It has also been resolute to establish Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with other universities in India as well as in abroad and Govt. Organization for academic enhancement of the students in particular and to have an overall institutional development in general.
  • The placements for the Geoinformatics students are brought into focus to get them an assurance for job and for that a collaborative environment would be developed with the software enterprises.
  • The development of the adjoining areas of the University which are part of the Chotanagpur Plateau (a very distinguish geographical setting) has placed under special attention where some research work could be conducted through research project and the focus would be to bring sustainable development of the region.
In doing so, it would have been possible to bring individual, economic, social, intellectual and cultural development of the country.

Facilities

a. General Laboratory:

Our department is composed of three different laboratories for post graduate students which are as follows:

  • Geomorphology
  • Environmental Laboratory
  • Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS

The laboratories are well set up to fulfil the normal practical classes and specialisations. The Geomorphology Laboratory is equipped with Sensico Petrological Microscope, Slide Caliper, Geological Hammer and Clinometer. The Environment Laboratory for chemical and physical analyses of soil and sediment samples. It has NPK Soil Testing Kits, Soil Organic Carbon Test Kit, and Soil PH Meter for analyses of various environmental parameters. The RS/GIS Laboratory housing 30 workstations with state - of - art facilities in terms of software (ERDAS Imagine 2018, ArcGIS, XLSTAT, Surfer, Grapher, Corel DRAW, MATLAB and Curve fitting), satellite data , digital maps and equipment that can handle most types of spatial analyses. It also has an A0 scanner and printer installed. The cartographic survey facilities of the department include survey equipments like Dumpy Level and Theodolite.

b. Computer Laboratory:

Our department has a well set up computer laboratory in combination with other basic science departments.

c. Research Laboratory:

The department has a plan to establish the following laboratories for advanced research in future:

  • Sedimentology Laboratory
  • Advanced RS/GIS and Survey Laboratory
d. Departmental Library:

The department has maintained a Departmental Library with the help of central library and specimen copies collecting from the departmental faculties. It has ample number of books for the access of students and teachers of the department. The library has 52 books to facilitate the students with their requirement of books mentioned as referred/reference books in the respective syllabus.
